China human rights situation improved amid global downturn: official
2009/11/04

A Chinese official has said that the government's economic stimulus policies and measures aimed at solving livelihood issues amid the global economic downturn have helped secure people's human rights.

Wang Chen, director of the Information Office of the State Council, made the remarks at the Second Beijing Forum on Human Rights concluded Tuesday.

Offsetting the impact of the international financial crisis with a four-trillion yuan (588 U.S. dollars) stimulus package, the government has made intensive efforts to ensure and improve employment, health care, education and social security for the people, Wand said.

China's gross domestic product (GDP) grew 8.9 percent year on year in the third quarter of this year.

Jiang Guangping with the All-China Federation of Trade Unions said that trade unions have raised 800 million yuan this year in their aid program for an estimated 20 million laid-off migrant workers to get re-employed.

Sherab Nyima, councilor of the China Society for Human Rights Studies and vice president of Minzu University of China, said all the ethnic groups have benefited from the stimulus policies.

"China has found its own solution to ethnic issues, which features equality, unity, regional ethnic autonomy, and common prosperity for all ethnic groups," he said.
