2019-12-05 20:00

On December 5, 2019 local time, President Moon Jae-in of the Republic of Korea (ROK) met with State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi at Cheong Wa Dae in Seoul.

Moon Jae-in asked Wang Yi to convey his warm greetings to President Xi Jinping. He expressed, the year 2019 is of great significance for both the ROK and China as President Xi Jinping and I had a successful meeting in Osaka in June and bilateral relations have achieved positive progress. The close dialogue and cooperation between the ROK and China is an important force to maintain peace and security in Northeast Asia and promote regional economic development. The ROK side is willing to actively seek convergence between its own development strategies and the Belt and Road Initiative, explore third-party cooperation and further cement people-to-people and cultural exchanges between the two countries. The ROK side supports the advancement of the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) as scheduled and is ready to accelerate building the ROK-China-Japan free trade area. I am looking forward to attending the 8th ROK-China-Japan leaders' meeting in China at the end of this month and will work closely with the Chinese side to ensure the success of the meeting. The ROK side appreciates the important and constructive role of China in pushing forward the peace process of the Korean Peninsula and will work with all parties to promote the peace process on the peninsula.

Wang Yi conveyed Chinese leaders' sincere greetings to President Moon Jae-in. Wang Yi said, at present, unilateralism and power politics are threatening international and regional peace and stability. It is necessary for China and the ROK, two close neighbors, to enhance dialogue and cooperation in a timely manner, jointly champion multilateralism, safeguard free trade and adhere to the basic norms governing international relations.

Wang Yi expressed, China-ROK relations have maintained a good development momentum under the guidance of the two heads of state. The Chinese side is willing to, together with the ROK side, maintain close communication on the high-level exchanges in the next stage. We welcome Mr. President's attendance at the 8th China-Japan-ROK leaders' meeting in China, and are willing to reinforce coordination with the ROK side to ensure the success of the meeting and open up new prospects for trilateral cooperation. The Chinese side stands ready to strengthen the alignment of the Belt and Road Initiative with the ROK side's development strategies, so as to create greater space for bilateral cooperation. We need to accelerate the second round of China-ROK free trade agreement negotiation to upgrade our cooperation in trade and investment. We should also ensure the signing of the RCEP next year and speed up the construction of the China-Japan-ROK free trade area. We need to, based on our consensus, properly handle and actively promote the bilateral relations to continuously enrich the connotation of China-ROK strategic cooperative partnership.

Wang Yi also briefed on the Chinese side's principled stances on the Korean Peninsula issue.
