On August 12, 2019, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi held talks with Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, Minister of External Affairs of India, in Beijing.

Wang Yi noted, the current international situation is undergoing significant changes. Each with a population of more than 1 billion, China and India are the two major developing countries and representatives of emerging economies, and both are at a new stage of development. Following the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence, the two countries enjoy friendly coexistence and mutually beneficial cooperation. It fully conforms to the fundamental and long-term interests of the two peoples, and will also make new contributions to world peace and human progress. Both sides should earnestly implement the important consensus reached by the leaders of the two countries, cherish the outcomes of the improvement of bilateral relations to date, further enhance mutual trust and deepen cooperation, in a bid to constantly inject new impetus into the healthy and stable development of bilateral relations.

Subrahmanyam Jaishankar said, India-China relations play a unique and important role in global politics amid current world uncertainties. The leaders of the two countries held a successful informal meeting in Wuhan last year, which greatly boosted the development of India-China relations. The Indian side is looking forward to the second informal meeting between the leaders of the two countries in India this year. India is willing to intensify communication with the Chinese side to make sure a complete success of the meeting and elevate bilateral relations to new highs.

Both sides believed that they should take the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relationship between China and India next year as an opportunity, give full play to the role of important institutional dialogues, expand cooperation in such aspects as trade, investment, production capacity, tourism and border trade, strengthen defense exchanges, and accumulate more cooperation results. The Indian side will actively participate in the second China International Import Expo.

Both sides held that they should continue to promote the solidarity and cooperation among emerging markets and developing countries, work together to uphold multilateralism and the multilateral trading system, safeguard the purposes of the Charter of the United Nations and the basic norms governing international relations, and safeguard the status of China and India as developing countries, as well as the rights of development and legitimate interests that both sides are entitled to in the World Trade Organization.

Wang Yi stated the Chinese side's principled position on the Indian side's recent unilateral move on the Kashmir issue. He hopes that the Indian side will play a constructive role in regional peace and stability. Subrahmanyam Jaishankar explained the Indian side's stance, noting that the Indian side is willing to exercise restraint and improve its relations with Pakistan. The Indian side will also abide by the consensus reached with China on maintaining stability in the border areas, and continue to work with the Chinese side to properly solve the border issue through consultations.
