Wang Yi: The Chinese Side's Stance on the Trade Frictions between China and the United States (US) Gains Understanding and Support
2019-05-22 23:32

On May 22, 2019 local time, on the sidelines of the meeting of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) in Bishkek, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi told the press that I briefed the foreign ministers of all SCO member states on relevant situation during the meeting. The Chinese side's stance on the trade frictions between China and the United States (US) gained understanding and support from the foreign ministers.

Wang Yi expressed that recently, the China-US trade frictions have attracted great attention from the international community. I made clear to all the foreign ministers at the meeting of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the SCO that it is the US side that has all along lacked the willingness to address the reasonable concerns of the Chinese side and resorted to maximum pressure, which led to failure in negotiations. I stressed to everyone that the Chinese side's efforts not only aim to protect its own legitimate and lawful interests, but also to safeguard norms governing international relations and free trade regime. The truth the Chinese side introduced gained extensive acknowledgement and support from the foreign ministers. It was made clear in a press communiqué of the meeting of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the SCO just issued that all the SCO member states should jointly oppose any form of unilateralism and trade protectionism.

Wang Yi pointed out the Chinese side will certainly not accept it if the US side builds China-US trade negotiations on an unfair basis. Any unfair deal will not be reached or acknowledged. If the US side is willing to negotiate on a fair basis, the door of negotiations of the Chinese side will open wide. However, if the US side resorts to maximum pressure, the Chinese side will fight to the end.
