On March 1, 2019, Member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and Director of the Office of the Foreign Affairs Commission of the CPC Central Committee Yang Jiechi held telephone talks with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo of the United States (US) at request.

Mike Pompeo briefed Yang Jiechi on the summit held in Vietnam between leaders of the US and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), saying that the US side will maintain contacts with the DPRK side and continue to seek resolution of the Korean Peninsula issue through dialogue and consultations. Speaking highly of the Chinese side's active role in the Korean Peninsula issue, the US side is willing to maintain communication and coordination with the Chinese side.

Yang Jiechi noted that the Korean Peninsula issue is too complex to be resolved in one stroke. China hopes that both the US and the DPRK can remain determined and patient, meet each other halfway and make unremitting efforts to push for peace talks to achieve new results and new progress. The Chinese side is willing to continue to play a constructive role in the Korean Peninsula issue.
