Yang Jiechi Meets with Foreign Minister Heiko Maas of Germany

On February 16, 2019 local time, Member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and Director of the Office of the Foreign Affairs Commission of the CPC Central Committee Yang Jiechi met with Foreign Minister Heiko Maas of Germany on the sidelines of the 55th Munich Security Conference in Munich.

Yang Jiechi expressed that China and Germany are all-round strategic partners. The two countries have achieved important outcomes from mutually beneficial cooperation. The Chinese side is willing to, together with the German side, continuously maintain the momentum in close high-level exchanges, and strengthen dialogue and communication at all levels and in all fields. The Chinese side stands ready to share opportunities in the aspect of cooperation on projects under the Belt and Road Initiative with the German side, and continues to supply foreign companies investing in China with an open, transparent and fair market environment. It is hoped that the German side will continue to view Chinese enterprises' investment and high-tech cooperation in Germany in an objective and open manner. The Chinese side attaches importance to its relations with the European Union (EU), and will continue to support the European integration process and back Europe in playing an important role in international affairs. Under the current international situation, it is necessary for China and Germany to strengthen cooperation and jointly safeguard multilateralism and the rules-based international order, in a bid to promote China-Germany relations and China-EU relations in the new era for new development.

Heiko Maas said that Germany attaches great importance to developing its relations with China. Bilateral relations have been running at a high level, which is inspiring. The German side is willing to deepen bilateral cooperation in all fields, including cooperation under the framework of the Belt and Road Initiative. The German side expects China to play a greater role in international affairs. Under the current international situation, the German side is willing to enhance strategic communication with the Chinese side and strengthen bilateral cooperation in multilateral affairs, so as to jointly cope with global challenges.

Both sides also exchanged views on international and regional hotspot issues of common concern.
