On October 24, 2018, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi met in Beijing with former Deputy Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim of Malaysia.

Congratulating Anwar Ibrahim on his election as a member of the parliament again, Wang Yi expressed that the Chinese side fully believes that led by Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad and the new administration team, Malaysia will maintain economic and social stability as well as realize new development. With a friendship dating back over 1,000 years, China and Malaysia are both developing countries and emerging markets whose common interests outweigh specific problems. Strengthening unity and cooperation, improving political mutual trust and deepening cooperation in various fields between the two countries will not only be conducive to the prosperity and stability of the two countries, but also to the overall development and growth of developing countries and emerging forces as well as promoting more balanced development of the world.

Wang Yi pointed out that the Chinese side has always viewed and valued China-Malaysia relations from a strategic height and long-term perspective. During Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad's successful visit to China this August, China-Malaysia relations realized smooth transition, and the leaders of the two countries reached important consensus on continuously deepening friendship and cooperation between China and Malaysia and boosting bilateral relations for greater development in the new era. China and Malaysia should not only carry forward and consolidate the traditional friendship, but should also further expand and reinforce bilateral relations and promote cooperation in such new areas as science, technology and innovation, so as to inject fresh impetus into the common development of the two countries.

Anwar Ibrahim noted that China is the first country I visited after being elected to the parliament and I am willing to learn from China's successful experience through this visit. Both Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad and I myself cherish the relations with China very much. We are not only willing to inherit the traditional friendship between the two sides, but must also further carry forward it. Both Malaysia and China are developing countries, and the Malaysian side admires China's huge achievements, and deeply believes that China will score greater development. The Malaysian side stands ready to deepen practical cooperation in various fields such as investment, innovation and culture with the Chinese side and welcomes China to play a more important role in the progress of the economic and social development of Malaysia.
