Wang Yi: China and the US Should Stick to the Right Path of Win-win Cooperation and Avoid Straying into Conflict and Confrontation
2018-10-08 23:53

On October 8, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with US Secretary of State Michael R. Pompeo in Beijing.

Wang Yi said that after the US Secretary of State asked to visit China, the Chinese side agreed to the meetings. In the recent period, while continuously escalating trade frictions with China, the US has also taken a series of actions regarding Taiwan and other matters and levelled groundless accusations against China's domestic and foreign policy. US actions have damaged China's rights and interests, undermined China-US mutual trust and cast a shadow over China-US relations. They also run counter to the interests of the two peoples. We urge the US to immediately stop its misguided comments and actions. China and the US should stick to the right path of win-win cooperation and avoid straying into conflict and confrontation. I understand that you also want to exchange views on regional issues such as the Korean Peninsula. As two major countries which are both permanent members of the UN Security Council, China and the US need to step up communication and cooperation to fulfill our international responsibilities. Of course, such cooperation must be based on a sound and steady China-US relationship. I hope your trip to Beijing will contribute to this goal.
