On September 15, 2018, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam and Secretary of Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee Nguyen Thien Nhan in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.

Nguyen Thien Nhan welcomed Wang Yi to chair the 11th Meeting of Vietnam-China Steering Committee for Bilateral Cooperation in Ho Chi Minh City, and expressed that the Steering Committee plays an important role in the planning and development of Vietnam-China relations. I had visited China for multiple times and chaired the meeting of the Steering Committee twice. Until today, I have still paid much attention to China's development and Vietnam-China relations. China's success has not only benefited its own people, but also brought opportunities for the national development of Vietnam. Comrade Ho Chi Minh had lived in China for ten years, and visited two thirds of China's provinces. Vietnam and China are both neighbors and comrades. We should cherish and inherit the revolutionary comradeship forged by elder generations of the two countries including Ho Chi Minh, promote Vietnam-China comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership to achieve more positive outcomes, and benefit the two peoples. Holding an important place in economic development of Vietnam, Ho Chi Minh City is being committed to building itself into a "smart city". It is hoped that Ho Chi Minh City could further intensify cooperation with relevant cities and provinces of China.

Wang Yi noted that China and Vietnam are not only good brothers connected by mountains and rivers, but also good partners enjoying win-win cooperation and good comrades sharing common goals. People of the two countries have forged profound friendship in long-term harmonious co-existence, which is elevated during the mutual support for national independence and national liberation of each other and constantly deepened in the cause of socialist construction. China and Vietnam are two significant socialist countries in the world. Both countries and the two Parties have trusted, supported and cooperated with each other. Such gestures have not only propelled respective national development and rejuvenation, but also will exert positive and profound influence on the progress of human development. China and Vietnam are as close as lip and teeth. The relations between the two countries have gone beyond bilateral scope, and are of strategic significance. Wang Yi said that Ho Chi Minh stands as the flag of China-Vietnam friendship, and encourages us to strive in this regard forever. We should inherit and carry forward China-Vietnam friendly traditions as Chairman Mao Zedong, Premier Zhou Enlai, and President Ho Chi Minh did with sincerity and trust.

Wang Yi expressed that sub-national cooperation constitutes an important part of China-Vietnam relations. China-Vietnam friendship is the common cause of the two peoples. Boasting revolutionary traditions, Ho Chi Minh City serves as an important window for reform and opening up of Vietnam. Members of the Chinese delegation who went to Vietnam this time to participate in the meeting of the Steering Committee included heads of Guangdong, Guangxi, Yunnan, Chongqing as well as those of other provinces and cities. The attendance of the Chinese delegation at the meeting shows that China-Vietnam relations have been increasingly deepened with more extensive cooperation. The Chinese side is willing to, together with Ho Chi Minh City, further enhance contact and deepen cooperation, in a bid to make positive contributions to the enrichment of China-Vietnam comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership.

Prior to the meeting, accompanied by Nguyen Thien Nhan, Wang Yi laid a flower basket before the statue of Ho Chi Minh.
