On September 4, 2018, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Foreign Minister and Special Representative of Prime Minister of the Government of National Accord Mohamed Taha Siala of Libya, who was in China for the Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC).

Wang Yi welcomed Mohamed Taha Siala, who attended the Summit on behalf of Prime Minister Fayez Mustafa al-Sarraj, and emphasized that the important outcomes yielded from the Summit will not only promote collective cooperation between China and Africa, but also vigorously facilitate the development of China-Libya relations.

Mohamed Taha Siala expressed that the Libyan side highly values the FOCAC Beijing Summit. Prime Minister Fayez Mustafa al-Sarraj was scheduled to visit China to attend the Summit, but he could not make it due to the abrupt change of domestic situation, for which he deeply regretted. The Libyan side will, as always, firmly support the construction of the FOCAC and the Belt and Road Initiative put forward by President Xi Jinping, so as to promote the constant development of Africa-China and Libya-China relations.

When talking about the current Libyan situation, Wang Yi said that the Chinese side pays high attention to the Libyan situation and supports the legal Libyan government; the Chinese side supports the settlement of differences through dialogue, and calls on all relevant parties in Libya to cease fire immediately; the Chinese side supports the Libyan side in continuously advancing the political process so as to bring the country back to the normal track at an early date. The Chinese side attaches importance to carrying out practical cooperation with Libya in various fields and is willing to participate in the reconstruction of Libya in an active and steady manner.

Mohamed Taha Siala thanked the Chinese side for its strong political support to Libya. The Libyan side is willing to actively explore cooperation with the Chinese side in the field of reconstruction and promote Libya-China relations for greater development.
