2018-09-03 23:45

On September 3, 2018, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN) António Guterres at the Great Hall of the People.

Wang Yi expressed that Secretary-General's attendance at the Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) in China this time reflects that the UN attaches importance to developing countries, South-South cooperation and China. Yesterday, President Xi Jinping met with Mr. Secretary-General, and reached important consensus on adhering to practicing multilateralism, giving play to the due role of the UN and implementing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development against the international situation full of uncertainties. Development is one of the three pillars of the UN's work. China hopes that the UN will continue to pay attention to development issues and make greater contributions to helping Africa's development and promoting South-South cooperation. China is willing to strengthen exchanges with the UN, learn from each other, and actively explore trilateral cooperation in Africa to help African countries accelerate the process of industrialization and achieve sustainable and diversified development.

Wang Yi emphasized that President Xi Jinping put forward the concept of building a community with a shared future for mankind and China-Africa cooperation is the actual practice of realizing this concept. In the current context of rising unilateralism, China is willing to work with the UN to promote the current UN General Assembly to send out a strong signal of maintaining the rules-based international system with the UN as the core, and make joint efforts to build a community with a shared future for mankind.

António Guterres noted that I love Africa and China as well, and congratulate beforehand the complete success of the FOCAC Beijing Summit and hope the Summit will inject new impetus into Africa's development. António Guterres stressed that maintaining peace and stability and achieving sustainable development in Africa is the UN's key to advancing the cause of peace and development. The UN has always taken support and assistance for Africa as its focus of work. My participation in the Summit this time is to reflect the support for China-Africa cooperation. The African continent is currently at a critical stage of development. China can provide with markets, funds and technologies that are urgently-needed for African countries to help Africa carry out capacity building, implement the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Agenda 2063 of Africa. Highly appreciating China's long-term contributions to supporting peace and development in Africa, the UN is willing to continue to strengthen coordination and cooperation with the Chinese side in this regard. The UN attaches great importance to China's constructive role in international affairs and stands ready to work with the Chinese side to abide by multilateralism and maintain the rules-based international order.
